Author-in-Residence
My wife and little girl Shira visited this past weekend (I am here at Trapp as author-in-residence for a month) and we had a blast. Shira, who is 9, climbed the several trails on the terrific rock wall in the fitness center and we had a fun activity making her halloween trick or treat bag at the kid's club activity center on the 31st. Next day, with a sitter for our daughter in place for 2 hours, Bonnie and I climbed the mountain trail behind the Lodge up to the cabin, a terrific 4 kilometre walk.
Such beauty along the trail and a touching plaque placed by the Stowe Land Trust about 2/3 of the way up, dedicated to Johannes Von Trapp for all he's done to preserve this woodland and allow others to revel in it. I am featuring that hike in the new novel I am here writing and look forward to sharing it with readers some day down the road when completed. Meanwhile, the day was burnished with sunlight and the birches were in their glory, shedding and renewing themselves. I was the keynote speaker for the National Conference on Family Literacy this year in Orlando. I regaled them with stories of my Vermont roots and of course included my adventures at Trapp Family Lodge with Maria. I have some new stories to share in the future because, as I am finding, this magnificent facillty and setting is ever-growing and, like the birches I so love on this property, ever renewing itself.

Cheers, Jan
