The potato can be traced back to 3000 B.C. in South America. The potato was introduced to Europe by Spain in 1536, and was subsequently conveyed by European mariners to territories and ports throughout the world. Thousands of varieties persist in the Andes, where over 100 cultivars might be found in a single valley, and a dozen or more might be maintained by a single agricultural household.

The potato found its way to the von Trapp’s table in Salzburg, Austria and from there to Stowe, Vermont. Rosemary and Maria von Trapp still enjoy the potato.
