Cole Morgan, a University of Vermont student athlete, won the inaugural race of the Junior National Cross Country Championships being held this week at the Trapp Family Lodge ski center in Stowe. Kristina von Trapp Frame, head of the organizing committee was elated. "It couldn't be better than this; that the first winner among this fantastic gathering of up and coming talent comes from our own back yard. What a thrilling start for a world class event."

Today's races were preceded by Opening Ceremonies and a parade reminiscent on a small scale of the Winter Olympic Games that are in the dreams of all these young skiers. Athletes, coaches and officials began arriving early last week, to ensure that everything was ready for a world class event. And it was. Even the weather turned out perfect for racing, as medals were presented by Mammut and Cabot Creamery executives and two-time Olympian Tucker Murphy.

Today's races included 5k and 10k Classic interval start races for male and female racers, grouped by ages of under 16, under 18 and under 20. Tuesday, March 4th will be an official training day. Classic 1.4k sprint races are scheduled for Wednesday, March 5th.
