Winter can't be too far away when Trina Hosmer starts to assemble the women in her Stowe Nordic Outing Club women's Nordic training group.

Hosmer has been meeting with them every Friday afternoon for the past several weeks. This is the fourth year for the training group; people can still sign up by Nov. 1 by e-mailing hosmer@oit.umass.edu or calling 253-0810.

One of SNOC's goals this coming season is to improve on its fifth-place finish among the 57 clubs in last year's New England Nordic Ski Association Club Cup competition. Team captain Nat Goodhue said Stowe has an abundance of talented Nordic skiers who, if they participated, could help lift the club onto the podium in 2010.

Last year's winning club was Cambridge Sports Union, which beat Northwest Vermont of St. Albans by a mere 30 points. Twenty-nine of those 30 points were scored by two people age 75 or older in their age class.

Seven races are on this year's Club Cup schedule, starting Dec. 13 at Bolton Valley. Other stops are in Pomfret and Craftsbury; Jackson and Bretton Woods, N.H.; and New Gloucester and Bethel, Maine.

Complete details on the series and NENSA membership may be found on links at nensa.net. For information on joining SNOC: Carol Van Dyke at 253-4500 or e-mail cavandyke@aol.com, or visit stowenordic.org.

Stowe will host a number of Nordic events this season, and one of the first is the third Introduction to Performance Skiing and Racing Techniques clinic Dec. 12-13 at the Trapp Family Lodge Nordic Center.

The clinic features sessions in both classic and skate technique taught by former Olympians, U.S. Ski Team members and local standouts headed by Nina Gavrylyuk, a multiple Olympic gold medalist and 20-year member of the Russian National Team; she's now co-director of the Nordic program at Gunstock in New Hampshire. Information and sign-up is on the calendar link at nensa.net.

While this is the fourth year for the SNOC women's Nordic training group, a number of men have asked: “What about us”? Men interested in joining a SNOC men's Nordic training group can contact Dave Hosmer at 253-0810 or e-mail hosmer@schoolph.umass.edu.

The Stowe Nordic Outing Club will hold its fall meeting at Friday, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m. at the Golden Eagle's conference room in the pool building. Club events for the upcoming season will be discussed, including the schedule for Wednesday afternoon races.
