Maple-syrup producers around the state will open their doors this Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25, for Vermont Maple Open House Weekend.

The annual event celebrates the maple season and gives visitors a chance to learn about the sugaring process.

Some sugarhouses offer tours of their sugarbushes and many have activities for families, including sugar-on-snow parties and sampling of maple syrup.

“We expect to have another good year of maple syrup production,” said Bill Clark, a sugarmaker in Rutland County. “The weather this year is reminiscent of the 1949 season, when trees were tapped as early as Valentine's Day.”

Vermont is the largest U.S. producer of maple syrup and produced more than a million gallons of syrup in 2011. Vermont has about 2,000 maple producers.

Maple sugaring is a rich part of Vermont's identity and heritage,” said Betty Ann Lockhart, author of the book “Maple Sugarin' in Vermont” and member of the Vermont Sugarmakers' Association. “The Maple Open House Weekend is a quintessential Vermont event that celebrates this timeless tradition.”
