Two Stowe athletes pulled down top honors in the TD Bank Marathon Series in Nordic skiing.
Ryan Kerrigan and Robyn Anderson were named the series overall champions this week. Both placed first in their respective divisions, the men's and women's 50-kilometer freestyle/skate cross-country ski race, at the Sugarloaf Marathon March 17 in Carrabassett Valley, Maine.
Kerrigan and Anderson are both founding members of the Stowe-based VTXC Cross Country Ski Team; the team works out of, and is sponsored by, the Trapp Family Lodge Ski Center. Atomic skis and Swix wax are also sponsors.
“Both Ryan and Robin love the sport of cross-country skiing. For them it's the sport first and the racing second,” said Drew Gelinas, New England technical director for Swix and Atomic. “It is exciting for me, as an industry professional, to work with sponsored athletes who have that love.
“There is a spark in everything they do, whether it be teaching children the basics of cross-country skiing or competing in high-level events races or winning this year's overall champions title,” Gelinas said.
The TD Bank Ski Marathon Series is put on by the New England Nordic Ski Association, the ruling body of Nordic ski racing in New England.
The series is composed of five ski marathons, also called Loppets. To be named a champion, athletes must compete in four of the five races. A men's and women's overall champion is named each year, based on best overall results over the entire series.
VTXC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to coaching Bill Koch League, Junior, and Master level ski racers and runners while providing support to those VTXC athletes who are pursuing their own ski racing goals.
