When the temperature drops and the snow starts to fall, the greater Stowe area turns into a giant playground. Alpine and Nordic skiers and snowboarders can look forward to five months of prime winter recreation.
Scattered throughout those five months are loads of snow-sports events, races and tournaments. Here are some highlights of the season taking place at and around Stowe Mountain Resort.
Nov. 30: Trick Rail Unveil: Stowe mountain’s first rail jam of the season will include a DJ and prizes. Fifth Avenue Park, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Dec. 7: Mountainfest Demo Day: Ski and snowboard reps will be at the mountain to offer test runs on their latest equipment. ForeRunner Quad, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Jan. 5: USASA Slalom Competition: Vermont’s best slalom skiers will race at the mountain to earn points toward qualifying for national competitions.
Jan. 7: Ski Bum Race Series: Stowe’s recreational ski league, open to all Mt. Mansfield Ski and Snowboard Club members, kicks off its weekly Tuesday races. (teammmsc.org)
Jan. 10-11: UVM Winter Carnival: Division I alpine ski racers compete in this annual college racing event at Stowe, featuring the UVM Catamounts.
Jan. 11: Stowe Nordic BKL Mini-Marathon: A fun family event at the Stowe Mountain Resort Touring Center.
Jan. 18-Feb. 2: Stowe Winter Carnival: The town of Stowe’s 40th annual carnival will feature two weeks of ice carving demonstrations, zany winter sports tournaments and other activities. (stowewintercarnival.com)
Jan. 21-26: Winter Rendezvous Gay Ski Week: The 30th annual event returns for five days of skiing, riding, dog sledding, dancing and entertainment. (winterrendezvous.com)
Jan. 25: Rail Unveil #2: The mountain’s second dedicated rail event of the season takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a park to be determined.
Feb. 3-6: Stowe North American Cup: Some of the best male alpine racers in North America will compete on Spruce Peak’s Main Street.
Feb. 14: Stowe Derby Recon Practice: Pre-ski, practice, observe and record the Stowe Derby descent, with pros on hand to offer tips. Base of the LookOut Double, 1:30 p.m.
Feb. 23: Stowe Derby: The annual downhill cross-country race starts at the top of Mt. Mansfield and winds its way 16 kilometers to Stowe village. (stowederby.com)
March 1-8: Junior National Nordic Ski Championship: Trapp Family Lodge will host the nation’s top Nordic talent for a full week of races, with opening ceremonies in Stowe village March 2. (jn2014stowe.com)
April 5-6: Sugar Slalom: The two-day event celebrates spring with huge alpine races, costumes, sugar on snow, donuts and pickles. (teammmsc.org)
