A very good place to start: Winter escapes: A very good place to start
CATHERINE MALLETTE, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
February 21, 2010
When I learned that one of America's top cross-country ski resorts is run by descendants of Capt. and Maria von Trapp, my Sound of Music -loving heart began to sing. Located in Stowe, Vt., the Trapp Family Lodge was just a few hours' drive from Hadley's school.

Allen Van Anda, former cellarman at Pickwick's Ale House, has brewed his first batch at the new Trapp Family Lodge Brewery in Stowe. This first beer is a traditional Helles style lager to be followed by a Vienna style lager. Depending on lagering time, the beers should be pouring by late February.

Trapp's was the first true cross-country ski resort in the United States, starting in 1968 (the year I first cross-country skied). Currently, they groom about 45K for both tracks and skate skiing, make snow on seven or eight kilometers (more than any other resort in New England, I believe) and mark another 10 kilometers of backcountry ski and snowshoe trails.

Two years ago Sam von Trapp, now 36, came home to Stowe after 14 years of traveling and working as a year-round ski instructor in Colorado, Brazil, and Chile. As Sam is the only son of the resort's manager Johannes von Trapp—who is himself the son of the legendary Maria von Trapp of Sound of Music fame—curiosity abounds about his present and future roles at the resort.

There are miles and miles of trails left to explore on Mansfield's flanks leading into Underhill and south to Trapp Family Lodge, historic trails that allow the skier to experience the roots of skiing in New England. A time when there was no need for the term “backcountry,” because at the beginning, that's all there was.

I decide to take a break from downhill skiing and drive 10 minutes to the Trapp Family Lodge. I know I'm in the right place when I spot a road sign that reads: "A little of Austria. A lot of Vermont."

I decide to take a break from downhill skiing and drive 10 minutes to the Trapp Family Lodge. I know I’m in the right place when I spot a road sign that reads: “A little of Austria. A lot of Vermont.’’ Perched on a ridge overlooking the town of Stowe, Baroness Maria von Trapp and her husband, Georg, known as the Captain, found a worthy substitute for their beloved Salzburg. They bought a working farm and began welcoming travelers to their Austrian-style homestead in 1950. When the large family was not traveling the world as the Trapp Family Singers, they entertained their guests.
