The Great Outdoors

Vermont offers a wide range of natural beauty and outdoor recreation throughout the year. During the warmer months, enjoy hiking on more than 1,000 miles of trails and a statewide network of mountain biking trails, many of which you’ll find right here at Trapp Family Lodge. During the winter months, you’ll find 19 downhill ski areas and 6,000 miles of snowmobile trails across Vermont. Our Lodge in Stowe offers a number of cross-country and snowshoeing trails while downhill skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed at the nearby Stowe Mountain Resort.

Mountain Biking

One of the best ways to explore the Vermont countryside is to get out and ride! Trapp Family Lodge's 2,600 acres feature an extensive mountain bike trail network with two skills parks. Ride our eight miles of expert and intermediate single track or more than 20 miles of double track through mountains, fields, and forests. Ride Hop Over or Lager Lane to the von Trapp Brewery Bierhall — the best trailhead ever!

Water Activities

Glide through Stowe’s many lakes and rivers in a canoe or kayak. Lake Elmore, the Green River Reservoir, and Lamoille and Winooski Rivers are easy drives from Trapp Family Lodge and offer excellent boating experiences as well as exceptional views of Vermont mountainscapes. Canoes and kayaks can be rented at Umiak Outdoor Outfitters and Pinnacle Ski & Sports.

If you prefer spending the day reeling in big ones, there is plenty of fishing to be had in the area. Operations like Catamount Fishing Adventures and The Fly Rod Shop can get you outfitted and guide you to the best spots. In the winter, you can also try your hand at ice fishing.

Stowe in the Snow

In the winter, Stowe becomes a snowy wonderland, with activities like cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, and ice-skating to entertain visitors. You can enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and sleigh rides right here at Trapp Family Lodge, though we recommend visiting Stowe Mountain Resort for downhill skiing and snowboarding.

If snowmobiling is something you crave, Stowe Snowmobile Tours will get you set up with a vehicle. If you want to give dogsledding a whirl, Umiak Outdoor Outfitters offers experienced "mushers" and handsome teams of Siberian huskies that will give your family a ride they’ll never forget. For ice-skating, head to the Jackson Arena, where you can rent skates and glide around the rink.
